Accessibility

The standard

This site is built to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. Every page can be used with a keyboard alone, works with screen readers, keeps visible focus, reflows on small screens and at 200 percent zoom, and respects a preference for reduced motion.

What we have done

  • Every artwork has a written description of what it shows, as well as its title, year and materials.
  • A skip link at the top of each page goes straight to the main content.
  • Menus and panels can be opened, used and closed with the keyboard, and Escape closes them.
  • Text and controls meet the contrast ratios set out in WCAG 2.2.
  • Sold works are marked in words as well as with the gallery red dot.
  • Nothing on the site moves on its own. Galleries and slideshows only change when you ask them to.
  • The contact form labels every field, explains any error in words, and tells you how to fix it.

Known exceptions

While the new site is being reviewed, a design picker sits at the bottom of every page. It is keyboard operable and announces each change, and the page leaves room for it so it never covers what you are reading. It will be removed once a design is chosen. Some artworks are installations photographed outdoors; where a photograph cannot show the whole work, the description says so.

Report a problem

If something on this site is hard to use, please tell us through the contact form. Say which page you were on and what happened, and we will fix it or send you the information in another way.
